Purchase this hard drive at the risk of your data! January 6, 2009 T. Sullivan This hard drive worked perfectly well for a good 12 months and then ceased to work for no apparent reason. I have since discovered that the chassis is working fine but the actual drive itself is defective. This means that a computer is able to detect the USB interface, but nothing more. I can not access the hard drive and it is now useless to me and I have lost all of my data. I checked my warranty and I am entitled to a replacement, for which I have to pay the postage fees, but I am not entitled to data recovery. On the Western Digital website there is a list of data recovery specialists which if used will not void the warranty. I called the nearest UK company and was informed that they encounter 3 - 4 cases of exactly this type PER WEEK and that the standard price for data recovery is 334.00!! THIS PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE! Western digital have no obligations to pay for data recovery and I have been advised that attempting to get any compromise from Western Digital will be a waste of time and phone bills. I implore you to think very carefully and research before you buy this product. I will no longer be purchasing from Western Digital, this defective product has meant the permanent loss of much sentimental data.
Back up drive not doing its job December 31, 2008 badoubade (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
well I used the drive for my backups and guess what, it stopped working after 6 months. so i lost 500GB of content! Very disapointed but again, anything can fail. Not recommended. Spend a bit more and go for an Iomega, or buy 2 or 3 smaller drives.
Fast, reliable and good value for money December 29, 2008 K. L. Wren (Herefordshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use three of these drives - one as the main working drive (I keep my actual PC drive free of data) and others which are used for backup along with some 1TB Freecom drives which I inter-change. I like the design of these drives and the fact they stand on end thus reducing the footprint on my desk. They run almost silently, are fast and, unlike many other external hard drives, at most the casing only become mildly warm to touch rather than quite hot. I've bought many Western Digital drives - starting several years ago with 40GB drives which felt huge at the time but are now virtually obsolete. In all the years I've used them - and I am quite a heavy user, I've never had one fail (unlike several PC internal hard drives which have died and taken all my data with them). I can't fault the drives - they fulfil their promises and perform well so can be purchased in confidence.
A decent bit of kit for the price December 27, 2008 Richard Price 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first external HD and Western Digital product and i have to say im pretty impressed with it. This is not to say it doesn't have a few flaws (you can't turn your PC on with it plugged in and i couldn't copy and paste transfer a few of my massively stupid high res' videos) but all in all im happy with my purchase. The unit itself is rugged and although it scratches easily and the case came off when i dropped it (but went back on easily enough) ive managed to haul it around the world and it still works fine despite the cosmetic blemishes. There's also a few clever little innovations such as a 10 min power saver as well. This unit is a solid little chunk of metal about the size of a thick dictionary so don't expect a lightweight flimsy plastic credit card that fits in your pocket! When the prices of the 1tb drop down im definately going to purchase another WD hard drive.
Cant Seen A Problem! December 25, 2008 Mr. Jason G. Earley (~~UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had the 500 gb version for around 4 months, I have filled it with music and take it to gigs with me *(im a dj) I am yet to find a problem, The passport version does have the advantage of being powered by USB but this looks great on my desk and has been reliable so far. I have worked in the I.T. Trade for many years and the brand is very good, ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL FROM TIME TO TIME! so you should do as i am instead of getting one massive drive would be better to get 2 cheaper smaller ones and back them up with each other. And thats what im going to do buy one more 500 and all should be safe and sound. hope this helps! see youtube jearley2424
