4 out of 5 stars Love it but as Creative fans will know it does have some flaws   January 5, 2009
MissyT online (London)
As an owner of a creative Zen when I looked to upgrade I knew I would purchase another Creative product as I am not an I pod fan. I dithered for ages reading and re-reading the reviews on Amazon before deciding to go for the X-Fi. I haven't used all of the features yet but I will review what I have.
The player itself has very good sound (rich deep bass) and the supplied headphones are excellent (they reduce external sound without you having to crank up the volume and destroy your eardrums!) I agree with other reviewers about the layout of the keypad I personally can't see the need for 9 buttons and they are not backlit which is a pain when using the player in the dark.
I use Napster to go and my key concern was that I'd be able to use it without any sync issues as Napster don't seem to have this player on their compatible player list. So far so good no problems it's quick and easy to add music to it. I haven't used the wireless capability yet because I'm lazy and haven't read the instruction manual and adding the password for my network looks very fiddly. I have used audio books in the past and you get a free subscription and 1 whole book from Audiobooks too so I thought I'd give it a go. The player does have bookmark functionality and it does remember where you were even if you come back to the book after a few days too which is good because for some reason audio books send me straight to sleep. The sleep timer function comes in handy for that too.
As for the software it is not at all intuitive and I prefer to add content to the player by viewing it as a folder in windows explorer or via Napster. I have converted some videos to watch on the player but to be honest that is a bit of a gimmick as the screen is so small (I couldn't imagine watching a whole film perhaps music videos and short clips) and all the videos I added had to be converted via Creative video conversion software even though the player is supposed to support a wide range of formats. The video conversion software is easier to use than the Creative Centralle rubbish. That has lots of funny symbols and you have to hover over them for an explanation of what they do so I just messed around a bit to figure out how to use it but I really don't like it because it is not at all user friendly.
I could not give 5 stars as it is not perfect. I get confused over 5 star reviews that have negative points. Amazon need to get a 0.5 star but I still would give 4 stars for the X-Fi. The keypad is probably the biggest detractor from me giving 5 stars but you do get used to it quite quickly. The software is also a pain but don't let that put you off as you don't have to use it. You will need a case or screen protector as the screen does get grubby. The length of the USB cable is a Mickey take or attempt for the Guinness Book of Records shortest USB cable. I brought a universal charger for my Zen Micro from Amazon a couple of years ago when I was going on holiday and great news it also charges the X-Fi which saved me a bit of money splashing out on a new one.
All in all a good player light and portable but still packs a good punch!

5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT PIECE OF KIT extremely good definitely buy   January 2, 2009
Hi i got my zen x-fi 16 gb for christmas and i am so pleased my favourite part is the easy browsing menu's, before christmas i watched every review (youtube. etc) they say you cant notice the x-fi YOU CAN REALLY NOTICE IT especially with the headphones make sure you keep up to date with firmware because it speeds your device up and allows easier functionality creative have thought of every thing i would definitely buy this instead of a ipod touch if you want an incredibly good loking sounding and viewing experience with yes fewer features but a sturdier build and less that can go wrong with it buy this and get a nintendo ds for less than the equivalently priced 16gb ipod touch and have much more versatility in two device definetley buy

5 out of 5 stars Ipod To Zen X-Fi   January 1, 2009

Right well i am 18 and i get though alot of MP3 players (i normally lose them or brake them) and my last 5 have all bin Ipods ranging from a nano to the touch and i thought there was nothing that could beat a Ipod for a MP3 player.

When my friend got a Zen stone and they let me borrow it for a week or so i could not belive what i have bin missing out on.
No it might not "flow" as well as a Ipod Touch and the software is very basic after coming down from using Itunes for years but i decieded to get a Zen X-Fi

The value for money is outstanding compared to any MP3 i have ever had and the FREE headphones you get with it was better then my 79.99 pair i brought from Sony. The fact that the memory is also exspandable is also a fantasic idea. I have 10GB of music and 4GB of TV Shows so i brought the 8GB X-FI and a 8GB memory card for 92.24!!!!!! I could not belive it would cost atleast double that for a 16GB Itouch

So i would say this is a very good buy for anyone looking for a good strong and very light MP3 player.

3 out of 5 stars SD card not well integrated   December 26, 2008

This looked like an excellent buy given the price of other flash memory mp3 players, I wrongly thought the SD card facility would allow me to buy multiple cheap SD cards (which would work out cheaper than loads of built-in memory and better/quicker than a hard drive machine) to make up for the 8GB memory. Got this wrong though, probably the fault of my own unrealistic expectations, because I didnt realise that the music on the SD card would not work as part of the player's library, and could only be browsed through a basic file directory. So, it does work but not very well, and not as I had hoped. Will get one with a bigger memory to start with.

4 out of 5 stars Iplayer   December 18, 2008

This is a great player but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the iplayer. I've got a PSP and an ipod and transferring video to my PC and then converting was just too much hassle. Basically I wanted to easily watch programmes in the gym or the train where there is no wifi. The Creative Zen X-Fi was listed on the iplayer website and now...........download the file to my PC, transfer to Zen and watch at leisure for up to a week I think. It's great. The interface takes a little getting used to but really is fine and it's got great headphones, a built in radio and you can add memory through the sd slot. Oh and it's got a speaker too.....maybe I should have given it 5 stars. Download iplayer programmes for the tube or train though. It's absolutely great.
