2 out of 5 stars One very disappointed family of Donaldson fans!   January 8, 2009
Kaka (UK)
I was really excited to see another Donaldson/Scheffler book available, not only because I thought my 2 girls aged 3 & 4 yrs would be delighted but also because we have all immensely enjoyed reading every other one of their collaborations time after time, without tiring.....until now.
From the story-teller's point of view, I found the rhyming text didn't flow as smoothly as her other books, whilst the 'stick man, stick man' line drove me crazy.
I also found the subject matter slightly grim, bad luck follows bad luck for the poor little stick man, until he ends up on the fire, much to the consternation of my 2 girls!
Even though things eventually come good for the little chap, my girls still looked slightly shell-shocked by the end of the book and there were none of the customary cries of 'again, again' which normally follows an outing of, say, 'A Squash and a Squeeze', etc.
I hope this is just a blip as we can never wait for their next book to arrive, and would hate to be disappointed again!

5 out of 5 stars Their best book yet!!   January 3, 2009

I ordered this book for my daughters aged 2.5 and 4.5.
As I started reading the younger one joined in - as she must have heard it at nursery.
It's one of the only books she sits through to the end and shouts "Again, again!" at the end.
My elder daughter is the bookworm and loves it too.

However I think I'm the biggest fan! I never tire of reading it. This wonderful duo have produced some of the most engaging and vibrant children's books and have struck gold with Stick Man. I heartily recommend it!

I felt compelled to review this book because my 4 year old boy loves it so much. Since we discovered "Room on the Broom" 5 years ago with our daughter we have always read and loved JD/AS books in our house. "Snail and the Whale" being another favourite. I can't explain why he loves this book so much (other than the catchy repetitive text and typically beautiful and descriptive pictures)but he insists on having it read to him every night and then reads it himself (well- tries to) and brings it in our room first thing in the morning to be read again! DEEP JOY....

Stick Man is a fantastic book which my 2 girls who are 7 and 4 and I love. It flows really well (something I didn't find with Tiddler) and the story is just great. This probably now equals Snail and the Whale as one of my favourite kids books ever.

2 out of 5 stars The 1st Julia Donaldson, Axel Scheffler book I dont like!   November 7, 2008

I have been reading Julia Donaldson,Axel Scheffler books to my son for the past 3 years and have almost every title they have done.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and he has loved listening to them - over and over and over again.
However, for me this is the first book that I find annoying to read. The 'Stick Man, Stick Man' rhyme is seriously annoying. My son still enjoys it but I don't, so I will give only two stars for the usual level of interesting background details and superb illustrations by Alex Scheffler.

For me the best Donaldson/Scheffler book is still 'Room on the Broom' - it was the first one I bought and it still gets read 3 years on. For me it is better than the Gruffalo titles too!
