1 out of 5 stars Boring   January 7, 2009
Mog (Dundee, Scotland)
Having read every Patricia Cornwall book over the last 20 years I never thought I would be saying this about any of her books. This book was boring. The only real excitement was in the last few pages, but even then it wasn't up to the standard of early Cornwall books. In places this book felt more like an academic set text for forensic students and criminalists than a novel. The plot just plodded along with none of the characters doing anything. The story and narrative was disjointed and unclear and, in parts, very difficult to understand or keep in context. I was so disappointed. This was a christmas present along with the new Stuart McBride. I devoured the McBride in almost one sitting but took days to wade through Scarpetta. I read lots of different authors, all within the same genre of crime and police procedurals (with Lee Child as the occasional escapism!!)and can see Ms Cornwall's crown being knocked off. The rise in popularity of this genre may be attributed to Ms Cornwall but I think she has gone as far as she can go. Stick to the day job at John Jay and McLeans and leave the exciting story telling to Kathy Reichs, et al.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   January 4, 2009

I agree with the majority of the other reviewers, Patricia Cornwell is now back on track properly since 'The Last Precinct'. The characters are clear, the writing is understandable and for the majority of the time, believable. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to find out what the next installment is like. I hope that Cornwell doesn't move them again, as she has done with her last few novels.

I'd started to think that Patricia Cornwell had lost her edge and flair, but now she is giving Kathy Reichs a good run for her money!

1 out of 5 stars What rubbish   January 4, 2009
Doug Fleming (London)
The early Scarpetta books were great but her recent novels have been a complete waste of time. The plots and characters are unbelievable and the writing disjointed. I bought this book in the hope that she might have improved, and she has - just a bit - but certainly not enough for me to give her another chance.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   January 2, 2009

When it comes to the Scarpetta series Cornwell never disapoints. Thrilling to the end!
I don't like to write about the plot as it's more exciting for you to find out for yourself, personally I only want to know if it's liked or not. This is loved!

5 out of 5 stars Just finished it - it's a cracker!!!   January 2, 2009
Walshylass (Glasgow, Scotland)
I have read all the Scarpetta novels, and this is up there as one of the best, I loved it. I'm not sure you could easily join the series at this stage though - you could, but it would make more sense if you'd read the preceding books.

Great story - if a bit unusual - and the character interaction was well crafted.

Get it! Read it!
