Amazing? No. August 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
O.K shooting mechanics, boring graphics,it lacks any unique stlye and no online achievements. Fast paced but ultimately nothing here that's superior to Gears of War. One more thing, where is the motion blur?
Great Continuation of the Call of Duty Franchise July 22, 2008 I bought this solely on the strength of Call of Duty 1 which I played on the Mac and decided to buy this on the 360 because of recommendations. I was a little worried that the feeling of the Call of Duty (the idea of not fighting alone, of being part of a battle and great multiplayer) would be lost in a modern warfare enviroment. It turns out that I was wrong.
The Good:
- The single player campaign is amazing, exciting and occassionally shocking. I like that completing it unlocks multiplayer content - clever. The missions are well realised and some are just awesome (the sniper mission to be exact)
- Multiplayer is just brilliant, with a rank system and reward system that keeps you coming back for more. Good players get rewarded and camping is hard. All game modes are fun and I play COD4 multiplayer more than any other game. Xbox live is still one of the best online services on any system - IMO.
- Graphics and game design are top notch and even multiplayer is pretty to look at. Some of the environments are almost hyper-real and firefights really do feel frenetic - especially with 5.1.
The Bad:
- Single player is way too short. I am, at best, an average player and I completed it in a couple of days. That sucks.
- No vehicles. I personally find vehicles in multiplayer annoying, but I can see that they can be fun.
- No peaking around corner or blind-firing. Most tactical shooters have these as an options and even COD1 and 2 had the ability to peak around corners. Come on Infinity Ward, keep up!
Overall, I love this game. But the single player is way too short and there are some little omissions from MP that could have made it great.
Semi Decent but more of a kids game!!! July 17, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is my review on Call of Duty 4 - I'll keep it brief
To get the positives out the way:
First thing i would say is this game is really good looking. Not the best but it's really nice.
Second thing i like is the story, the characters were really enjoyable and fun.
Third thing is the sniper mission. It was totally awesome!!!!
Now onto the negatives:
The game play is sooo straight forward it's really quite dull. It's just a plain bog standard shooting game. You follow your teams mates, kill some guys, follow your team mates, kills some guys and repeat til you've completed the game. The only time it breaks out of this boring tradition is the sniper mission that i mentioned above because it was different.
Also there's something with the AI that bugs my happiness. Instead of shooting at you, they prefer to throw grenades... 5 at a time. Like every other COD game it's just bloody frustrating.
OVERALL:
Overall this game is a plain boring shooting game. It's not as good as the first 2 COD games by a long shot. But if you're into cliche boring shooting games like Halo 3 then you'll love it.
If you can get it for about 15 buy it. It'll keep you amused for about 5 hours until you complete it. it's just unfortunatly not as good as the kids make it out to be.
Personally keep your money and buy BIOSHOCK or a Ghost Recon game instead. Play something different. :)
A good game but inferior to 'Battlefield: Bad Company' July 15, 2008 This is a very good game especially for first-person-shooter addicts. Graphics are excellent, it sounds fantastic and it plays very well. The single-player mode is enjoyable and the multiplayer mode is even better. However, in Multiplayer mode it is limited in its scope and its longevity suffers as a result. Also, the maps are too small which means that bordem sinks in sooner than its main competitor; Battlefield: Bad Company. Unlike Bad Company, in COD4, you cant get in jeeps, tanks and helicopters.
Like I sated ealier, this is a very good multiplayer game, but its not the best first-person-shooter out there .. Bad Company is.
The game by which all others will be judged July 9, 2008 When I bought this game I just expected C.O.D.2 or 3 but with modern weapons. As far as the story mode goes this is to a large extent what I got with a few notable exceptions. The story line is involving, the combat is intense and challenging (I played on Hardened which made me shout plenty). It is sadly a very short game, but that is made up for by the graphics which are stunning, a complete joy to behold on H.D.,gorgeous,unparralled. Yep I'm quite impressed. Then there is the online play. It's clear that online play is what this game is about. With many superb maps to play on you can approach most of these utilising the almost limitless combination of weapons available to you. All of the weapons are different and have their own good and bad points each one becoming unlocked as you rank up. The perk system is inspired allowing you augment your style of play so you can carry extra genades if you want to or carry claymores to suprise your enemies with. Other perks include stopping power to increase weapons damage, deep impact to shoot through walls better (great with the RPD)plus many many more which become available as your rank progreses, also there are a multitude challanges to complete which rank you up further when completed. The game play is its self excellent with sniper duals, close combat, grenade fights, air strikes, helicopter attacks and much more all rendered beautifully and incredbly intense. There are problems with the game, the main ones for me being the spawning system which means you often spawn were you just died(sometimes in front of the player who just killed you) or spawning in the middle of an air strike or the worst for me which is your whole team repeatedly respawning in one corner of the map so your'e all cornered and get hammered. Also the host migration system means that when the host leaves, the battle ends and so does your legendary performance!!(it would of been, honest). For a long while I just couldn't stop playing, it's the best game I have ever played.
