Great...until the end August 25, 2008 When I first started playing Bioshock I wasn't as amazed as I'd been expecting. Sure the graphics are stunning, and the controls work very nicely, and the voice work is perhaps the best I've ever come across. But then I picked it up again a few days later, and suddenly found I couldn't stop playing the game without wanting more.
This is a very addictive game. The graphics are A+, and for me the level of difficulty is worth a mention. It's not super-hard if you don't want it to be, and I didn't find myself having to replay many bits of the game at all. Also the controls are a joy to use, and many of the weapons are superb. I particularly enjoyed freezing the splicers, and then shooting them to pieces with the shotgun.
Do you rescue or harvest the little sisters? That was an interesting dilemma the first few times, but got a little tiresome after a while. There was also a bit too much running around finding things, although having hints and a map was very handy.
And then there's the ending...I won't spoil it, but boy does it suck. Well it did for me. After 2 fairly lame levels which didn't feel in keeping with the rest of the game, there was a pretty quick video which also didn't totally make sense, and then...nothing. Just the home screen to start the game all over again. I've since read that even the developer didn't like the ending.
So in summary, a very good FPS, which is a joy to play once you get into it, and up to around 80% of the way into the game is great fun, spooky, atmospheric and memorable in so many ways. Pity the last 20% dragged and had such a sucky ending.
Definitely worth 4 stars, and worth a purchase.
Just Buy It! August 25, 2008 This game is so good, after i completed it i just had to start it again
shockingly good! August 25, 2008 This one of the best shooters ever made. The levels and characters are well designed. It has the best storyline in any game. The weapons are good with variety. The graphics are very good. It has a very creepy atmosphere and is scary in some places. It combines rpg elements, like upgrading your weapon, with shooting, puzzles and horror.
One of the best games ever.
Film Noir Meets Bladerunner August 21, 2008 Set in a dystopian parallel Earth, this game hooked me from the very start. I've played it through 5 times now and each time the variations allow for a unique experience. A few small niggles (you can easily get a little confused with the mapping system and a little short) are forgotten amongst some truely excellent gaming moments. This made it all worth while buying the 360 for me.
Bioshock-ingly Good July 30, 2008 Bioshock is by far the best game I have played on the Xbox 360 to date, and indeed a very long time. The graphics are gorgeous, and will have you gazing in awe from start to finish, often distracting you from the task at hand. The creepy sound effects and apt period music create a palpable and spine-tingling atmosphere. The plot and voice acting are amongst the most gripping and authentic I've come across in video-gaming, and I would go as far to say on par with the likes of groundbreaking RPG's `Mass Effect' and `Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic'. Incidentally, the plot is so captivating that a Bioshock movie is currently in the process of being commissioned. No doubt that will end up being a retched pile of sputum like every other game-to-film conversion that has gone before.
Anyway, back to the game. The conventional weapons in Bioshock are the standard melee weapon in the form of a the wrench, and several firearms including a magnum, tommy gun, shotgun, grenade launcher, chemical thrower, and crossbow, all of which can be fed various ammunition types which are tailored to inflicting more damage on a specified enemy. The use of a camera allows you take pictures, or as the game calls it "research", which provides damage bonuses against increasingly robust foes. Unlike just about every other first person shooter, the melee weapon remains a valuable and powerful weapon during the entire game thanks to clever upgrades that are available upon your journey. And this feature is not merely exclusive to the wrench, because firearm modifications subsequently become available which allow you to improve the rate of fire, damage, and ammo capacity of a weapon. Alas, there are only a limited number of upgrades to go around, so one must choose prudently which weapons and features to enhance.
Then there's more unconventional means of attack and defence through the use of `Plasmids'. Plasmids allow you to do such novel things as distribute fire, electric, or even a swarm of bees from the palm of your hand. Then there's telekinesis, or enraging your enemies to turn upon themselves and annihilate each other. These sorts of attack are both fun and easy to execute, and work well alongside conventional weaponry. Just as conventional weapons require ammunition in order to be used, plasmid attacks similarly require energy called `EVE', which can be found scattered throughout each level inside hypodermic needles, which you then must inject into your arm.
There is also some other neat little challenges, such as hacking gun turrets, vending machines, health units and so forth, which result either in reward or reprisal depending on a successful or unsuccessful hack.
I could go on and on about this game, and in some ways I already have. Bioshock has everything any first-person shooter has to offer, and more. I can hardly wait for the sequel.
