The most annoying game i've ever played! June 4, 2008 L. Scott (West Yorkshire, England) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
OK, Fifa '08. I had been looking forward to this game ever since id got bored of Fifa '07. I couldn't wait for it. All the hype about intelligent AI and glorious goals blah blah blah. but, im disappointed and ill tell you why.... this game is so annoying! To mention just a few, the commentary is repetative, stupid and doesn't even follow the game Here's an example... You'll be running down the wing with C.Ronaldo and you whip in a cross, he slices it and it goes out over the bar. The commentator will be like "Oh and that shot goes just over the bar". Can't the game tell i pressed cross rather than shot? It doesn't sound bad but trust me after 30+ games its annoying and thats not the only stupid thing the commentators say, you'll notice dozens! Another annoyance is the heading of the ball. Its ridiculously hard. I mean im not a moron who hasn't ever played Fifa, ive loved Fifa since Fifa 2000 so i know how to play it and if i say so myself ive always been pretty good at it but every team you play are masters at heading. You win maybe 1 out of 10 headers and that 1 usually goes wide or over. Ive tried timing and jostling and pressing different buttons but its just so annoying! You'll have your man in the perfect position to head for goal but you get out jumped or head wide all the time. Ive even had 5foot Theo Walcott out jumping 6foot2 Rio Ferdinand, its stupid! One more is the so-called "Intelligent AI" Ive seen 2 month old rats with more Intelligence than the AI in Fifa! Ive lost so many games because of the goalkeepers, the opposition will play a through ball into the box, it will be a 70-30 ball in favour of the keeper but he moves so slow that the striker almost always gets there first and scores. Your supposed to use the Y button to bring him out but the Y button is also the through ball button so when you bring the keeper out by holding Y a defender will come running in to try a through ball! Because of the keeper's slowness the defender always gets there first and through balls it to the opposition or out for a corner.... whos idea was it to have 'keeper rush out' and 'through ball' on the same button!? The list of annoyances could go on and on. In the interest of fairness im not going to just point out the bad bits, there are good bits too! The graphics and ball physics are brilliant, you never see a replay where the ball goes through a players leg or bounces off the bar whilst being half an inch from touching the bar! Although the players do all look like something from "The Hills Have Eyes" They do have a slight resemblence but they just look abit deformed! Another good point is the free kicks. Hard to get the hang of but it is possible to do so (unlike the headers) and you can score some good goals. Speaking of scoring, that is probably the best bit about the game. When you score you get the sense of hard work paying off, you feel like you actually acheived it and nearly every goal ive scored has been followed by a "YES, GET IN!" So its not all doom and gloom for this game but there are more bad points than good. The trick stick thing, good idea but it doesn't work in game. The one on with the keeper loading screen is good for practising tricks but when your actually in the game you have a different view so the trick you practised up,down, down for, will when in game this become right, left, left, too confusing. You could change the in game view to Pro camera but then that takes away the fun of Be A Pro mode because in affect your already playing Be A Pro because of the camera view! By the way, another annoyance is the fact that the power bar on the loading screen thing is different from the in game one so practising free kicks is pointless because you have no sense of where to stop the power when in game! Now onto the controls. They're ok, few bad points but overall they're fine. To pass to the second man away from you, you have to hold the pass button just a bit longer than usual but there isn't a definate guideline so sometimes you'll lose the ball by passing to the second man when you wanted to pass to the first man. Also the anolog stick isn't sensitive enough. You have the ball in the keepers hands and you want to throw it to the left/right back but if you don't aim in almost the exact direction he will throw it to a central defender who is marked, he'll lose the ball and your opponent scores! So the controls need a bit of a tweak but other things like lobbed through ball and finesse shot work fine. To summarise... Fifa '08 is an OK game, ive played over 100 games so far so it is slightly addicting although i have turned off the console half way through 2/3 of those 100 games because its so annoying. If you really want to buy it then buy it, you'll have it on eBay along with mine in a matter of weeks. Myself, i wish i'd have not wasted my money and waited until Fifa '09 to see if EA can iron out the creases! Thanks for reading, i hope this review was useful to you (even if it took you 3 hours to read!)
Make PES look childish! June 1, 2008 ginja ninja 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The goal is gaping, your player shoots, he misses, but he puts in the rebound, GOAL!!! Fifa 08 is a cracking game of footy, exciting on the pitch and off. Add the fully licenced kits and team names to Fifa's terrific gameplay and Fifa triumph over PES hands down. The gameplay is so realistic, either end to end (like Manchester United vs Chelsea, Champions league final) or slow and sluggish (england vs usa, friendly.) The graphics are mindblowing, from Rooney to Ronaldo, Ribery to Tevez, and the arena mode is fantastic. Bring on Fifa 09!
Pretty good May 28, 2008 Aaron Mulholland No point in comparing it with Pro Evo, its a different game, although based on the same subject, both have their good points with the pro mode in FIFA really surprising me, trying to play as one player and keep position and distribute the ball is an excellent addition and definitely gives FIFA something extra. I think this game provides more for a single player but the game-play is a little slow for 2 or more players.
Big improvement but lacking few things May 24, 2008 Mr. Mj Mathieson Taking nothing away from EA they have yet again created a brilliant Fifa and this being the first one i have bought on the 360 (all my previous being bought on either ps2 or gamecube) i didn't know what to expect, it's a really good game for the 360. Only things that stop me for giving it 5* is the lack of stadiums compared to the ps2 is unbelievable, online quality but that's down to the EA server not Fifa and why they gave the ps2 version be a pro season but not the 360? Apart from all those it is a brilliant game and i'm looking forward to Fifa 09 hope it isn't rooney and ronaldinho on the front, they are getting a bit boring now.
Almost there... May 23, 2008 M. Cross (Southampton, Uk) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
A couple of years back, i converted to Pro Evo from Fifa, reluctantly might i add, because of the dissapointing Fifa 07, I bought both Pro Evo 08 and later on Fifa 08, but for some reason, i took an instant dislike to Fifa, opting to stick with Pro Evo instead. Looking back, i'm still unable to figure out why i ignored Fifa for so long, because when I played against one of my Fifa enthusiast mates a few months back, I have not gone back to Pro Evo since. The menu setup is brilliant, all of the different options available to you are top notch, online play is great and "be a pro" although rather difficult is very innovative. The game play is great although still a little flawed, the passing is good, never perfect, but if it was, it would not be very realistic, a wayward pass every now and then although very frustrating, adds to the all round enjoyment. I've read a few comments about the reaction times of the players, and i have to agree, it is a problem, in Pro Evo, when you press the pass button for example, the player will pass it as soon as the ball is at an apropriate distance from his feet, sometimes even stretching to make the pass before an opponent makes a tackle. In Fifa however, the player will more often than not, take an extra touch before playing the desired pass thus resulting in loose passes or being tackled. This is very frustrating, but also adds to the challenge a little, i find myself reading the game alot more in advance than before. My experience playing against others online is that they prefer the direct route football, were they pass the ball to their quick frontman, and take on the entire back four, and the reaction problems with Fifa are understandably going to affect these people. I also hear alot said about the "through ball" situation. People should look beyond the words "through ball" as this action is not just designed to make defence splitting passes, which are difficult in Fifa. The difference between the two is simply: The "pass" button plays the ball to feet, and the "through ball" button plays it in front of your target player. The choice of which to use in a particular situation is vital. On a final note, as the game is very much designed to bring you as close as possible to real proffesional football, it would be nice if a little more attention was payed to the cut scenes, like as mentioned below, the substitutions, and also the trophy celebrations. I'm also confused as to why, at half time there is a full set of replays from the first half, and at full time, you are left with a few dull moments from the remaining minutes. To conclude, great game, with serious room for improvement.
