A true hub, for the network sniffers out there April 11, 2007 John F. Hubbard (San Jose, CA United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
For those of you (network analysts, doing packet capture) who require a true ethernet hub (not a switch, nor a "switching hub", nor anything else that hides traffic from any ports), this is the perfect product. I took a chance on it after two false starts: Netgear's low-end 10/100 4-port hub is so poor that it fails at around 80 Mb/s throughput (aggregate!), while LinkSys sells a "hub" that is, internally, a switch. Finally, I found that Wireshark (previously Ethereal) maintains a short list of true hubs. This charmingly inexpensive 3Com 8-port hub was on that list. Now that I've used it, I can attest that this is a true hub. Works flawlessly, and is attractive and well-built as well. Enjoy.
