Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The SPA3102 delivers clear, high-quality voice communication in diverse network conditions. Excellent voice quality in a demanding IP network is consistently achieved via the advanced implementation of standard voice coding algorithms. The SPA3102 is interoperable with common telephony equipment like voicemail, Fax, PBX, and interactive voice response systems. The SPA3102 offers all the key features and capabilities which service providers can provide customized VoIP services to their subscribers. The SPA3102 can be remotely provisioned and supports dynamic, in service software upgrades. A secure profile upload saves providers the time, expense, and hassle of managing and pre-configuring or reconfiguring customer premise equipment (CPE) for deployment. Linksys understands that security for end users and service providers is a fundamental requirement for a solid, carrier-grade telephony service. The SPA3102 supports secure, standard encryption-based methods for communication, provisioning and servicing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent device and highly configurable   September 18, 2008

I just got the SPA3102 Gateway a couple of days ago. This device has a lot of options that allow you to fine-tune its performance, for example to operate behind a firewall and router, or to fine-tune to the available bandwidth on your Internet connection.

For some reason I didn't have the administration guide after I copied files from the "setup" disk. This did turn out to be an problem, because I was unable to connect using the default IP address described in the quick install guide. To begin with, it turned out that a D-Link router on my network had the same IP address for configuration. But I was still unable to connect after I removed all other devices on my network. Finally I downloaded the administration guide from the Linksys download page for the SPA3102 device, and its "Basic Administration and Configuration" instructions described how to get the IP address using a telephone attached to the device (****110#). The second page of the quick install guide, it turns out, has a table of the interactive dial commands that may prove useful if you're having trouble initially connecting through the Web browser. For instance, you can enable the Web utility. For good measure I did that (****7932#1#1). After I got the correct IP address I had no difficulty updating the firmware and using the Web configuration utility.

Another reviewer claimed that the firmware may only be updated with at least Windows Vista. I downloaded the firmware update and followed installation instructions to install the firmware using Windows XP. No problem.

The same reviewer also described lack of support from Linksys. Contrary--Linksys has a community forum in their product support area. That's where I found instructions to enable the Web utility (although for the particular question--which was exactly my problem--the respondent should've also described how to get the IP address). You can download the administration guide from the download area if you do not find it on the quick install disk.

I wouldn't expect Linksys to support all the configuration issues related to hooking up to a particular service provider. If you want to do IP telephony without configuration details, then get this device or whatever your provider offers pre-configured from your service provider. The configuration details for IP telephony require a certain hobby-level skill and interest. Support costs a lot of money, and at Amazon's price for the SPA3102, you're getting a great device, but I don't see any included margin for configuration support from the manufacturer. Your IP service provider should be expected to provide configuration instructions and support for their service. This is a seriously configurable device that without being pre-configured by a service provider, just isn't aimed at the turn-it-on and forget-about-it customer. If you want a configurable device and/or have good configuration support from your telephony provider, then the SPA3102 Gateway rates five stars.

This device appears to have some really cool IP to PSTN bridging functionality beyond that offered by competing devices, which I'll describe in my review after I implement it within the next couple of weeks.

2 out of 5 stars Experts only - this is a bear to configure and Linksys provides NO support.   May 29, 2008

I would give much higher reviews but it seems the support on this device is lacking from any corner of the earth. You can't upgrade the firmware except through OS less then Vista. It is a bear to configure and their is no configuration software - the company Cisco/Linksys sends you to chat on their site, which says it can't help. They then send you to India which says they can't help you after stumbling through scripts which they can not deviate from. They say go to the store which sold you the product. Hmmm... Amazon is going to help me configure Linksys Product for VOIP? Wow - Amazon must be really good - not. They send you to Voxilla which is the company that actually sold it to you.

Voxilla tells you to use their forums. If thats not helpful then use their help forum. If that is not helpful, and out of a last resort (paraphrasing their message), then leave a message and they will call you back. Its been quite some time now since I left a message. They have a configuration utility that is only a small part useful. So unless you are a technical genius or unless Linksys starts thinking its customers deserve some decent American help and assistance directly to their customers - avoid this company.

I've been using it for months now. Some of the features I've been using are the ff: I was able to use two (2) voip (static & IVR mode) settings. Also, it's capability to reset to avoid hung in the phone line. Very nice... and I'm recommending it to my clients.

SPA3102 is upgraded version of SPA3000 from Sipura. This device has all the cool features of SPA3000, and in addition it has a built-in router, which avoids SPA3102 not being behind any router. Secondly, it has larger memory(ROM), and enables two G.729 calls simultaneously.

All in all is truely a masterpiece.
