The wait is finally over!!! January 6, 2009 A. Priddy I have been waiting for this game to come out of a LONG time. I have not gotten to play MKvsDCU as much as I would like to, but it has been great. The gameplay is very fluid (cutscenes to fighting, etc.) The graphics are amazing and the character interpretations are spot-on!
A Myst Of Pure Fun With A Couple Blindspots January 6, 2009 Alex Hutchinson (Carver, MA) As a kid, how many times did you imagine pitting the warriors of one world against the heroes of another? That is the concept behind Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe and the concept works. There is a dreamy quality that emanates from the screen the first time you battle Scorpian against Superman or Raiden against Batman. This myst of pure fun continues in story mode as you follow the characters of one world as they battle against the pure rage that is confusing those of the other. That is the strength of this fighting game but like any game there are short falls. The gaps in the story line are lame. These include frozen artwork explained by voice overs that tell you what happened instead of showing you. You feel robbed by these gaps. I can only imagine that they ran out of megabytes and couldn't finish it completely. As for the fighting itself, you are given the complete moves of Mortal Kombat facing the more overt and brutish but limited moves of the DC characters. You can easily guess which side I preferred but that didn't stop me from playing with all of them. The fun factor remains high until you beat the game a couple times and then it gets old very quickly. I would recommend it to anyone who loves the characters, especially if you battle in versus mode against your friends. For the individual there is a limit as to how long it will hold your attention. My suggestion is to buy the game used but hang onto it for those boring nights when all you want to do is Finish your enemies.
Two worlds collide. January 3, 2009 Shoyu 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After the last Mortal Kombat game I had all but given up on the series. They had strayed so far from their roots...I thought they would never find that path that made them so successful in the early nineties...until I heard about Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Story: It is a fighting game...and while you may think there isn't much in terms of a plot...you will be amused by the not so serious story line in the game. An interdimensional accident merge the to evil leaders of both worlds...Shao Kahn of MK and Darkseid of DC...to kreate a very poor boss...Dark Kahn. This causes both universes to merge...while each character and each team remains true to their respected series. Gameplay: This is the make or break aspect of all fighting games...and MK vs DC does a remarkable job upgrading its fighting engine. Story is probably the first mode the gamer will undertake. In story mode you can pick either the Mortal Kombat or DC side of the story and play through using various characters to the end. Let's face it...MK does not do story modes very well...and this game is no exception. Kombat mode is the series' bread-n-butter...and it packs quite a punch in this area. Both line-ups are chalked full of characters you can choose. The fighting engine is similar to previous Mortal Kombat styles...you'll find lots of tapping and button mashing. New to this one are Freefall Kombat, in which you pummel one another while falling to a lower part of the stage, and Klose Kombat, which occurs when a grapple is used. They both use a guess which button the opponent is pressing to determine who wins...which is a bit too random for its own good. Each character has a unique fighting style which makes replay value high and keeps the game fresh and fun. Graphics and sound: The characters on both sides look better than ever and do a great job utilizing the power of a next gen console...with tearing outfits and battle damage adding a lot to the presentation. The only fault was the secondary outfits of the kombateers...it seems a golden opportunity was missed here...but overall the graphics are quite good. If you have ever played any Mortal Kombat in the past then you know how well the sound is in the series...from the voice acting to the bone crunching...all is done to match the intensity of the game. Final thoughts: There are some flaws in the game...and some missed opportunities to truly make a game for the ages...but what is presented to the gamers is good and a refreshing romp down the lane that made this franchise so popular in the early nineties.
I miss the old Mortal Kombat December 30, 2008 J. Ramirez (Dominican Republic) The game has great graphics and fighting combos. If you buy it, try playing in Story mode; that is mad cool. However, many of the fatalities are the same ones as before, and for the DC players are somewhat repetitive and/or disappointing. Also is a bit hard to make the fatalities since XBOX 360 controls have one big button for the directional arrows instead of 4 as in different consoles.
Well that was disappointing... December 30, 2008 John C. Hyde (Seattle, WA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a longtime, hardcore fan of both Mortal Kombat and DC Comics. I would have liked to be a huge fan of this game but I'm not. Other than the fighting itself which is very fun, the game is a huge step back from recent MK titles. Here are my problems with DC vs. MK: 1. There are only 20 fighters. This is crazy, the last MK game I bought had like 60 characters and this game, which features the DC Universe, has only a third of that. No Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Reptile, Rain, Smoke, Noob, Goro, Stryker, Cyrax, Robin, Nightwing, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Two-Face, Aquaman, Penguin, Scarecrow, Ra's al-Ghul, Sinestro, etc. Really shallow character selection. But why include all the characters when you can just charge people for them later? 2. There are no "Koins" to collect. In recent MK games there have been collectible koins you could accumulate in order to buy unlockables. It added greatly to the replayability, there was something to collect, goals to strive for. MK vs. DC contains nothing of the kind. 3. "Story" mode is awful. You can't skip past the cheesey cut-scenes either. 4. "Arcade" mode is even worse. Nothing has changed since 1991 where you have a couple fights and then battle a big monster at the end... ...zzzzzz... I've kind of been playing that mode for almost 18 years now, would it be possible to update a bit? A longer Arcade mode where you have to battle everyone in the game, perhaps? Or how about a Tournament mode, where you could create your own massive tournament and decide how you would like the real champion to be decided? Or a career mode where you're given an endless series of fights against different opponents, and a record is kept of your progress? Why are my ideas so much more interesting than anything Midway ever puts in a game? 5. No weapons or choosing between different martial arts styles. That's right, the MK weapons system is not in this game. Terrible. 6. No character creation. 7. No records are kept. I have not bothered to play on XBOX Live, (and at this point Im pretty much done with this game so I probably never will) but as far as single player goes there is no record of wins/losses or any tracking of your progress at all. Fortunately I got this for Christmas. I refuse to ever pay for a game like this. I need replayability, I can't stand short games. The Arcade mode is the most obnoxious thing, I can't believe we're still getting this antiquated Arcade mode. I also don't understand why a sports/fighting/competition based game would be released without any system of collection points and unlocking things. 2 stars.
