A good tool for a small group January 8, 2009 Shazam (California) Its harder and harder to find a decent black and white laser MFP. It seems the general consumer is moving more and more to color inkjets for photo printing, and the offerings for small offices just aren't as plentiful. I've used multiple Brothers, as have my friends. Brother has a sadly poor customer service reputation, a high toner cartridge replacement cost, and used to be a bit annoying to deal with software wise. This is compensated for by good cost for features and print quality. This printer is replacing another Brother which recently broke (only a small part broken, but given Brother's service, no real hope of getting it fixed at reasonable cost, so bought a new one.) The new printer has some nice features. It is Bonjour capable for Mac users, has wireless as well as ethernet if you want a direct connection, is more compact than my last Brother which is nice (though also giving a more flimsy feel). Initial tests show what I'd expect with decent quality of printing. Its scanning isn't exceptionally fast, but its good enough. Overall, I consider the Brother to be a good buy, and its why I've come back despite the known drawbacks. As long as you go into your purchase with eyes open, the Brother is a purchase I can easily recommend.
Brother MFC 7840W Laser Multi-Function Printer January 6, 2009 Mary D. Monroe This printer is used at home on a network of one desktop and one laptop computer. We are using the wireless interface but you can connect with wires if you choose. It was very easy to set up and is a great monochrome laser printer which also scans in color, faxes and copies. You can use the machine by direct input or by the control center software loaded to the computers. The print quality is great and after it warms up, its printing is very fast. We are very pleased with this printer and we believe the price from Amazon was very competitive. We have used the printer for about one month and so far no issues. We also purchased a high capacity toner at a good price from Amazon.
Great laser printer January 6, 2009 K. Treu (Commerce, Ga United States) This worked well without any trouble. Wireless function is awesome. So far the ink is lasting well. Highly recommended
Great product I found for a steal. December 29, 2008 Harshad Wadhar (Pittsburgh, Pa) This is a great printer and fax machine. I had no trouble setting up as a default printer on my home wireless network. I was up and running within minutes. I have a complex network, with two macs and two PCs on the Network. All it takes is inserting the disk and following the instructions. Print quality is great, the refils are cheaper than most HP printer cartridges. Great product I found at a great price at Office Max for 229.00 dollars.... Amazon price was higher and hence I bought it in the store and paid the tax and still came out ahead.
Quiet, fairly fast, cheap plastic, flimsy, slow scan, bad manual feed December 27, 2008 Max Rockbin (Portland, OR) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I replaced a Samsung multi-function laser with very similar specs with this one (Samsung was pretty buggy and the scanner feed gave out after 4 years). I've been using this printer for about a month. GOOD: Fast (printing), Quiet. Fast to print first page. Wireless is nice (easy to configure). Easy installation (on Windows XP). Small compared to other MFCs. Flexible scanning options with customizable presets. BAD: Manual feeding is TERRIBLE. I print checks and envelopes and manual feeding is the pits. It's easy for the paper to go in wrong, so you have to futz with it to get it to feed. Even if you feed it in straight, it often comes out printed askew. The manual feeder has a plastic cover that just snapped off after a couple weeks. Very flimsy. Scanning is slow. I think it's about half the speed of my Samsung. Even at black and white 200dpi it's slower than a $40 fax machine. I don't know if that's because I'm going wireless instead of wired or ??. Forget about full color scans (even smaller ones). We're talking half an hour or more. I scan most stuff to black and white (not even gray scale) because of the slow scanning speed. I'll have to try it wired. (Of course, there's a cheaper version of this printer that's wired, so then that'd be the better choice). The LCD display on the printer is impossible to read unless you're at the right height/angle. I put the printer under my desk and cannot read it looking down from a chair. I'm going to get it a little shelf to fix that. I shouldn't have to. The printing quality is fine so far. The document feeder works smoothly so far. I don't use the fax, so ... no comment. I can live with the slow scanning. The manual feed issues are going to be a pain in the butt forever. Or as long as this thing lives. If the internals are built to the same quality standard as the exterior, I don't expect that to be too long.
